description | Before being extensively practiced in the Old South after the abolition of slavery, lynching was massively used in the West of the United States causing hundreds of victims. The artist and academic Ken Gonzales-Day, specialists in the matter in California, questions through with work how the abundance of lynching in the region was able to supply lacks of recordings in the American History in spite of the fact that there are numerous photos of these crimes. An attentive look to the context of its perpetration, and to the influence of the conjunctive character of the crime, reveals that following the examples of other artefacts, an image has power and meaning only to those who conferred it, and that problems of accountability and a memory competition are not the only reasons in the forgetting of the Californian lynchings. |
