Description
Summary:Abstract The Hydrodictyaceae family comprises unicellular to colonial organisms found mainly in lentic freshwater, oligotrophic or eutrophic freshwater environments. We investigated and documented the occurrence, frequency, and geographical distribution of Hydrodictyaceae in Goiás state, Brazil. A total of 14 infrageneric taxa were identified there, including 10 species, 3 varieties, and 1 taxonomic form, all of which were rare. Pediastrum duplex var. duplex f. cohaerens and Pediastrum argentinense were observed in oligo- or mesotrophic aquatic environments, while Sorastrum americanum was found in eutrophic waters. Notably, taxa such as Lacunastrum gracillimum, Parapediastrum biradiatum var. biradiatum, and P. duplex var. duplex f. cohaerens demonstrated significant plasticity both in their natural habitats and under laboratory conditions. We discuss here the taxonomic implications of findings concerning these species as well as others within the family Hydrodictyaceae.
