description | This article examines the developments regarding labor-state relations during the Vicente Fox administration (2000-2006), the first president of the democratic era in Mexico. The assessment is conducted from a dual perspective, considering both democratization and its effects on corporatism. On the one hand, the effects of political democratization on the relations between the state and labor organizations are considered. On the other hand, the reshaping of the authoritarian corporatist structure in the labor sphere is examined, a characteristic of the hegemonic party-state. The cases of the Congress of Labor (CT), the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM), the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) and the National Union of Mine and Metal Workers (SNTMM) are taken into account. Democratization, after 70 years of PRI rule, meant a hope of reform and modernization within the labor sphere. However, corporatism remained as the regulating structure of labor-state relations in that sexenio and some authoritarian practices of the party-state system, such as lack of union democracy and state control on important unions, persisted. |
