| Summary: | This article explores the relationship between a researcher, her fieldwork and the people surveyed in geography, more specifically from the perspective of feminist geography and the geography of the body. Through a comparative study between Caen, Rouen and Portsmouth (UK) based on a thesis, this article highlights how personal experiences in and out of the field influence the construction of research questions and the relationship of proximity with respondents.
The research is based on a participatory methodology involving participatory mapping, systematic observation and comprehensive interviews. This approach made it possible to create a close and caring relationship with the respondents, by valuing their experiences and their active participation in the research process.
The methodology, structured in three phases, made it possible to reinforce this closeness and to develop an ethic of care, by making the respondents central players in the reflection on the planning of public spaces. The article is part of an epistemology of care, emphasising the importance of the researcher’s ethical and empathic commitment. The aim is to highlight the importance of the researcher’s corporeal involvement in the field as part of the production of knowledge. |
