Description
Summary:In their magazines published between 1969 and 1989, especially their flagship Strange, Lug editions provided the means to ascertain the specificities of Marvel superheroes. The hypothesis of this paper is that, by adding to the specific qualities of the fictional stories themselves, Lug’s editorial choices helped to bring out these peculiarities, and in particular the variety columns that appeared alongside the superheroic adventures. These sections project an ideal readership, envisioning their interest for the magazines in a cultural continuum encompassing scientific knowledge (history of science and contemporary technology), as well as science fiction literature and mythology. A closer look at three magazines in particular—Strange, Spécial Strange and Spidey—shows that the design of these columns converged with a specific set of stories, so as to participate in the formation of a specific identity for each magazine. A closer look at these seemingly minor sections establishes how they contributed to a French “geek” cultural continuum associating superheroes and scientific culture.
