Summary: | The author revisits the question of the effects of televised fiction from a cognitivist perspective. The question is laid out in terms of a complex interaction between fiction and viewers rather than a mere process of causality. To capture and hold the viewers’ attention, television has developed a specific writing mode, an actual TV rhetoric that gives to see those significant elements that the viewer will come to perceive and accept. The author presents the results of her studies of primetime soap operas, which focused on the interaction between TV writing and viewers. She shows how a communication code can transform itself into a cognitive tool for thinking. |
