Description
Summary:This syntax/semantics interface study of English coordinators AND, OR, BUT and FOR investigates the particular relation coordinators have with discourse linearity. It first aims at revisiting the distinction between coordination and subordination, leaving aside the notion of hierarchy of propositions, and suggesting definitions in terms of their respective dependence on discourse dynamics. A unified description of English coordinators is then carried out at the interface between syntax, semantics and pragmatics, where the connectives are described as traces of a specific operation. Within the main coordinative operation, they individualize in the way that they articulate three dimensions of the discursive space : the linear dynamic of discourse, the inter-propositional relation and the argumentative (inter-subjective) orientation.
