Description
Summary:The action research study reported in this paper aimed to develop the statistical literacy of five applied linguistics teacher-researchers enrolled in a doctoral programme at a Colombian public university. A 16-week statistics course was tailored to their needs. Evidence from pre- and post-tests, three assignments, and retrospective reflections indicated that participants improved in performing, interpreting, and reporting quantitative data analyses and results, as well as in critically analysing quantitative research studies. Positive perceptions were also reported about the course design. It is concluded that tailored statistical training at early stages of a doctoral programme helps applied linguistics teacher-researchers develop statistical literacies. Implications for statistical training in undergraduate and graduate applied linguistics programmes are also discussed.
