Subjects:	The essay elaborates seemingly minor differences between German and English on the levels of stress phonetics semantics and syntax with a particular focus on words that play a central role for the poetic structure. It illustrates how the high degree of similarity between the two languages precludes an approach to translation as free re-writing and forces the tran accentuating the tottering staggering movement that characterizes the poem. The translation radicalizes the subversion of “proper” enunciation and intensifies the morphological mushrooming that characterize the original version of the poem.
