Summary: | The present paper serves as a first systematic study on one of the lesser-known aspects of Umberto Eco's work, namely the one concerning his paratextual production. Specifically, we go through all the re-views, introductions, prefaces, postfaces and biblio-graphical notes written by Umberto Eco during his "presemiotic phase" (1953-1968); the aim is to trace a first path through Eco's paratexts and determine how many there are, what they are, which audiences they address, what themes they deal with, what influ-ences and connections they present with respect to what is written from time to time in his "major" works. The ultimate goal of this paper is to contrib-ute to obtaining a more comprehensive understand-ing of the complete Eco's body of work. |
