| Summary: | This article analyses the configuration of a terrorist hate remediation device during the jihadist attacks of 17 August 2017 in Barcelona and Cambrils. More specifically, we explore the case of Javier Martínez, father of a 3-year-old child who died in these attacks, who on 24 August 2017 hugged the substitute imam of Rubí as part of a post-attack citizen meeting. This act, highly publicised by the Catalan media, will be presented as a moment of fraternity and civic unity in Catalonia. The aim of this paper is to explore the dimension of this act as an illocutionary speech act constituting a mechanism for remedying jihadist hate in the country. In this sense, the aim is to shed light on the singularities of this device with a semio-pragmatic analysis of this object with the contributions of the sociology of social movements and attacks, in order to study the nature and implications of this act, its symbolic effectiveness and its pragmatic dimension as a highly performative action. |
