Summary:Purpose: this article aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of nodular cast iron, a common material used in sewage pump systems. When exposed to acidic conditions. By understanding the underlying mechanisms. Methodology: the experimental strategy used to accomplish this aim was as follows: 1- Immersion test: samples of nodular cast iron were immersed in an acidic medium for 30, 60, 90 days. 2-Electrochemical tests: electrochemical techniques were used to assess the corrosion rate and mechanism. 3-Surface analysis: to describe the corrosion products and surface morphology, surface analysis methods such energy- dispersive X- ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. Findings: pitting corrosion: nodular cast iron exhibited a high susceptibility to pitting corrosion, leading to localized metal loss. Unstable oxide layer: the formation of an unstable oxide layer on the metal surface contributed to the initiation and propagation of corrosion. Uniform corrosion: in addition to pitting, uniform corrosion was also observed, resulting from the dissolution of the metal in the acidic medium. Implications: improved material selection: careful material selection to ensure the long-term durability of pump components. Effective corrosion mitigation strategies: such as protective coatings and cathodic protection. Enhanced wastewater management.
