description The way historians relate to time is both an intimate and a complex matter. Intimate because, as Marc Bloch said, time is the "plasma" that makes history comprehensible; complex because, though time is the object of history, the historians themselves are caught up in it. Of this double and problematic proposition, as broad as it is all-encompassing, we will only consider a few aspects: first, how as of the beginning of the 19th century, the modern way of conceiving the historian's task was born and became institutionalized in a new regime of historicity. We will then show how time was to become, especially with the two first generations of the Annals, not only a tool to enhance the discipline but also the guarantee that history as a discipline would dominate the other social sciences which were in the process of asserting themselves. Lastly, for about twenty years now, the social and professional experience of a new relation to time, considerably transformed by the importance taken by questions of memory, has opened new interrogations about the historians' professional practices as well as about their place in society.
