| description | The article analyses a miracle which happened within the chapel of a charitable institution in the town of Asti in the early Eighteenth-Century. A host bleeding after the consecration is the object of the testimonies given by a young priest, a canon, a notary and a Savoyard intendant.Starting from the negotiation of the meanings of the prodigy between them, the article tries to interpret the episode along a jurisdictional perspective, which allows us to put actions in place through the intertwining of local powers. This direction of analysis changes our representation of the sacred, as it constantly underlines its close relationship with action. In the Old regime society religious phenomena existed and developed within intertwining jurisdictions and, by their own dynamics, modified them. In turn, this plurality of jurisdictions, of juridical systems and of actions changes also our conception of the local. To be able to observe actions – through the texts depicting them -, we must operate at a topographic scale. At this level the simultaneous presence of different institutional prerogatives, of their tensions and competitions can be properly observed. Thence, topographical analysis can be used to draw this plurality, and to inquire the possible relations between action, text and place. The thick reading of texts that I propose refers to actions which are interconnected by the means of rhetorical contexts. But these contexts are by no means linked in an exclusive way to other texts only. Other social, political and cultural actors are at work beside them. |
