Using Multi-Sensor Soil Moisture Probes to Decide When and How Long to Run Drip Irrigation by Sanjay Shukla, Nathan Holt

    Published 2014-07-01
“…Drip irrigation for vegetable production in Florida has been shown to be more efficient than the seepage irrigation (20%–50% efficiency), because drip irrigation supplies water and nutrients directly to the root zone, allowing efficiencies of 80%–90% to be achieved with proper management. …”

Study on Water Repellency Modification of Strongly Expansive Soil by DING Junhao, CHAI Linchun, ZHANG Jianjun

    Published 2022-01-01
“…To study the inhibition effect of water-repellent sand on the expansion rate of expansive soil, this study takes the strongly expansive soil of weathered slopes as an example and adds octadecylamine into sand as water repellent agents to improve the expansive soil. The expansion rate tests are carried out on the ring-knife samples with 27 times of compaction, and the expansion and contraction characteristics of modified expansive soil under the optimal water content are revealed. The results indicate that the natural soil changes from hydrophilic to water-repellent upon the addition of water-repellent sand into expansive soil, and the water repellency is significantly enhanced. The optimal water content of the five modified expansive soils decreases with the increase in water repellency, and the expansion rate is reduced from 35% to 9%,which means the expansion characteristics are greatly inhibited. It is feasible to restrain the expansion and seepage of strongly expansive soil by adding water-repellent sand (octadecylamine content of 0.04%).…”

An Improved C-V Model and Application to the Coal Rock Mesocrack Images by Yulong Chen, Hongwei Zhang

    Published 2020-01-01
“…The improved C-V model is adopted in order to process mesoimages of coal rocks containing single and multiple cracks and obtain high-quality binary images of coal rock mesocracks and the effective characteristic parameters of coal rock mesostructures through quantitative processing, which will lay solid foundations for the follow-up research into coal rock seepage computation and damage calculation. Studies have shown that, compared to the original C-V model, the improved model achieves better image segmentation effects and more accurate quantitative information about coal rock mesostructures for coal rock mesoimages with low contrast ratios and nonuniform grayscale, a fact showing that it can be applied to the calculation of coal rock permeability and damage factors.…”

Finite-element Stress and Deformation Analysis of a Geomembrane Face Rockfill Dam by ZHAO Yuhao, LI Zhenhua, CHEN Sining, GONG Hanzhong, LIN Wei

    Published 2022-01-01
“…For a certain reservoir dam that is a geomembrane face rockfill dam,the composite geomembrane is used as the face slab on the dam surface to prevent seepage.A three-dimensional nonlinear finite-element model of this reservoir dam was built to simulate the dam filling construction, the laying of the composite geomembrane, and the process of reservoir impoundment. The stress and deformation of the dam body and the composite geomembrane during the completion and impoundment periods were analyzed, and the rationality of the structural design of this geomembrane face rockfill dam was demonstrated. The calculation results show that the distribution of the dam body displacement and stress before and after impoundment follows the general rules and that impoundment is beneficial to the safety of the dam. Moreover, the shear failure of the dam body is prevented. The composite geomembrane is subject to tensile strain and stress in the lower half of the face slab due to boundary constraints.Nevertheless, the lateral and longitudinal safety factors calculated meet the requirements of design specifications, and the safety of the geomembrane is guaranteed.…”
