The tale of the rattle: Using rattle size to understand growth and sexual dimorphism in an insular population of rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus caliginis) by Roman A. Nava, José Jesús Sigala‐Rodríguez, Nathaniel Redetzke, Ivan Villalobos‐Juarez, Cristian Franco‐Servin‐de‐la‐Mora, Ramses Rosales‐García, Rulon W. Clark

    Published 2024-07-01
“…Here, we used a large database of rattle segment sizes recorded from island (Isla Coronado Sur, Baja California, Mexico) and mainland (Camp Pendleton, California, United States) populations of Western Rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus and C. o. caliginis) that separated approximately 10,000 years ago to compare body sizes at different ecdysis cycles, which allowed us to assess differences in growth rates and patterns of sexual size dimorphism. Our results show that rattlesnakes on Isla Coronado Sur appear to be born smaller and grow more slowly than their mainland counterparts, resulting in a “dwarfed” island population. …”

Association between healthcare resources, healthcare systems, and population health in European countries by Cholada Kittipittayakorn

    Published 2025-05-01
“…The models did not find statistical significance in the effects of healthcare system type (Beveridge-type or Bismarck-type) on life expectancy at birth or infant mortality rates. Additionally, Welch’s t-test indicated that the Beveridge-type healthcare system generally showed better performance outcomes compared to the Bismarck-type system. …”

Leveraging U-Net and ASPP for effective fault detection in photovoltaic modules by Khalfalla Awedat, Masoud Alajmi, Mustafa Elfituri

    Published 2025-07-01
“…Additionally, the U-Net-ASPP_Cent and U-Net-ASPP_Diag configurations provided IoU gains of 1.18% and 1.96%, respectively, while also reducing false positive rates. These results highlight the effectiveness of incorporating region-specific dilation strategies, enhancing the model’s ability to detect diverse and challenging fault patterns in complex thermal imagery. …”

Effects of high CO2 treatment on green-ripening and peel senescence in banana and plantain fruits by Mu-bo SONG, Lu-ping TANG, Xue-lian ZHANG, Mei BAI, Xue-qun PANG, Zhao-qi ZHANG

    Published 2015-05-01
“…In contrast to the differentiated color changing patterns, the patterns of the softening, starch degradation and soluble sugar accumulation in the pulp of 20% CO2 treated bananas and plantains displayed similarly as the patterns in the fruits ripening in regular air, indicating that the pulp ripening was not inhibited by 20% CO2, and the abnormal ripening of bananas in 20% CO2 can be considered as green ripening. …”

An Unexplored Diversity for Adaptation of Germination to High Temperatures in Brassica Species by M. Tiret, M.‐H. Wagner, L. Gay, E. Chenel, A. Dupont, C. Falentin, L. Maillet, F. Gavory, K. Labadie, S. Ducournau, A.‐M. Chèvre

    Published 2025-03-01
“…Our results show that both species exhibit heat tolerance to the temperature range tested, especially B. rapa, with an increase in speed and uniformity of germination time, as well as an increase in germination rate as temperature increased. As for B. oleracea accessions, the ability to germinate under heat conditions depended on the geographical origin; in particular, southern populations showed a higher germination rate than northern populations, possibly in relation to their warmer climates of origin. …”
