Can bees deter elephants from raiding crops? An experiment in the communal lands of Zimbabwe by Malvern Karidozo, Ferrel Osborn

    Published 2005-12-01
“…To test the effectiveness of bees in deterring elephants, hives were placed near entrances to maize, cotton and sorghum fields, along elephant paths to these fields and near paths to waterpoints in gardens. selected maizeand sorghum plots were visited 5 times a week for 6 months, and wherever field visits were made the observer recorded any activity between any elephant present and the bees from the nearby hives. 58 incidents of crop damage were recorded. 79% of the damage was done by bulls, 14% by cows and 7% by mixed herds. 59% of the damage was done to crops in their growing stage while 41% was done to crops in their mature stage. Maize was the most often damaged crop. This study found no significant difference between fields damaged with bees/hives and without bees/hives. …”

Clinical and morphological characteristics of skin and subcutaneous fat damage after surgical treatment and radiation therapy in patients with breast cancer (literature review) by E. E. Topuzov, T. T. Agishev, A. A. Bozhok, G. A. Dashyan, S. N. Sadygova, E. V. Prikhod’ko, E. A. Arshba

    Published 2017-05-01
“…Combination treatment of BC (surgery and radiation) carries a risk of RI of skin and subcutaneous fat which might lead to dystrophic changes in the form of prominent radiation-induced fibrosis of the irradiated area, lower the quality of life, cause suffering and even death. Most of BC patients are of working age, so the problem of local RI is of social importance, and it requires effective methods of treatment and rehabilitation allowing for favorable conditions for patients’ social adaptation. …”

Optimizing Assembly Error Reduction in Wind Turbine Gearboxes Using Parallel Assembly Sequence Planning and Hybrid Particle Swarm-Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm by Sydney Mutale, Yong Wang, De Tian

    Published 2025-07-01
“…Specifically, the PSBFO algorithm reduced errors from an initial value of 50 to a final value of 5 across 20 iterations, with components such as the low-speed shaft and planetary gear system showing the most substantial reductions. The 50 to 5 error reduction represents a significant decrease in assembly errors from an unoptimized (50) to an optimized (5) sequence, achieved through the PSBFO algorithm, by minimizing dimensional deviations, torque mismatches, and alignment errors across 26 critical gearbox components. …”
