Relationship between pharmacotherapy for major depressive disorder and healthcare utilisation in British Columbia, Canada: a retrospective population-based cohort by Sonya Cressman, Louisa Edwards, Kimberlyn McGrail, Stirling Bryan, Alison Hoens, Rohit Vijh, Sandra Peterson, Zeina Waheed, Mary Bunka, Nick Pang, Shahzad Ghanbarian, Gavin Wong, Linda Riches, Jehannine Austin

Published 2024-12-01
“…Objectives To describe the population that meets the criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD) in British Columbia (BC), compare patterns of healthcare utilisation between those with MDD who are and are not prescribed pharmacotherapy, and assess these relationships in models that control for potential confounding variables.Design We used a population cross-sectional study design among a cohort of individuals living with MDD and examined the relationship between pharmacotherapy and healthcare utilisation between 2019 and 2020 using linked billing and administrative data.Setting This study identified individuals with MDD using a validated case definition of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes in BC, Canada.Participants The final study cohort included 549 029 adult participants who met the MDD case definition.Explanatory variable Explanatory variable was the use of prescription antidepressant medication during the study period, based on BC PharmaNet data.Covariates Covariates include sociodemographic characteristics (age, sex, urban/rural residence, neighbourhood income quintile and comorbidities).Primary outcome measure Primary outcome measure was healthcare utilisation (outpatient physician visits, emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalisations). Results We stratified our analysis based on whether study participants were classified as ‘recently incident’ or ‘actively prevalent’. …”

SF1-specific deletion of the energy sensor AMPKγ2 induces obesity by Óscar Freire-Agulleiro, Ánxela Estévez-Salguero, Vitor Ferreira, Cassie Lynn Holleman, Julia García-Currás, Ismael González-García, Rubén Nogueiras, Manuel Tena-Sempere, Cristina García-Cáceres, Carlos Diéguez, Miguel López

Published 2025-02-01
“…Results: Our findings reveal that, in contrast to the obesity-protective effect of the genetic deletion of AMPKα subunits, the loss of AMPKγ2 in SF1 neurons leads to a sex-independent and feeding-independent obesity-prone phenotype due to decreased thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and reduced browning of WAT, resulting in lower energy expenditure. …”

“…The objective of this study was to investigate whether PSP with traumatic physical workplace injuries requiring surgery with anaesthetic have higher post-injury rates of mental disorders compared with the general population with similar non-workplace injuries.Design Retrospective longitudinal cohort study.Setting Population-based study using linked anonymised administrative data for PSP and the general population in Manitoba, Canada.Participants This study compared two groups hospitalised for a traumatic physical injury requiring surgery with anaesthetic between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2018: (1) PSP (n=293) injured in the workplace and matched 1:5 on sex, age, geographical region and surgical procedure code with (2) individuals in the general population (GenPop) injured outside the workplace (no Workers Compensation Board claim) (n=1198).Primary and secondary outcomes and measures As planned in the study protocol, the prevalence of mental disorders including anxiety, depression and substance use was measured in the cohorts 2 years pre- and post-injury.Results This study found an elevated unadjusted risk of depression in PSP compared with the general population in the 2 years post-injury, adjusting for pre-injury mental health (rate ratio, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.02 to 2.17; p<0.0001). …”
