Si, depuis le début du XXe siècle, la critique roumaine a identifié comme source première d’Eminescu la relation du baron Joseph Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall sur ce poème, intégré dans son ouvrage Geschichte des osmanischen Reiches (10 vols., 1827–1835), dont, selon les recherches de Perpessicius, Eminescu avait entrepris la traduction de la première partie, en revanche personne n’a observé certains détails non dépourvus d’intérêt qui rapproche la version d’Eminescu de la présentation du même poème par Dora d’Istria dans son ouvrage La poésie des ottomans (Paris, Maisonneuve, 1877, publié antérieurement dans la Revue des Deux Mondes en 1873). …”
