Published 2019-09-01“…Building on a large number of movies and images, this article analyses how war imaginaries were constituted over the course of two armed conflicts in which the Islamic Republic of Iran was involved: the war against Iraq (1980-1988) – the first filmed war – and the against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in 2012-2017. It questions how directors have staged the great story of the Battle of Karbalâ to define the war and support the national mobilization between 1980 and 1988, and drew upon a Shii imaginary both narratively and formally, while other directors used references detached from any religious link. …”
