John James Bezer (1816–1888) and his Autobiography of One of the Chartist Rebels of 1848 (1851)
Published 2022-03-01“…While explaining the origin and nature of a working-man’s political commitment, and fleshing out the figure of the ‘Chartist rebel’ in popular imagination, Bezer’s narrative is an opportunity to substantiate the radical discourse as something drawn from lived experience. This political outlook oscillates between the individualistic ‘I’ of autobiography, and the generic subject indissociable from collective destiny. …”

Les Méta-Barons, des cyborgs subversifs ?
Published 2019-12-01“…To answer this question, this article focuses on the representation of transhuman bodies in La Caste des Méta-Barons, an 8-volume comic strip series written by Alejandro Jodorowsky, drawn by Juan Gimenez and published between 1992 and 2003.The study of this comic strip, contemporary with the beginnings of the transhumanist movement, but above all with the emergence of an ambivalent figure of the cyborg (Haraway, 1984), highlights a certain representation of the posthuman body, which pre-dates current developments on the question.Through the study of the narrative and graphic structure of these albums, this article shows that contrary to appearances, the transhuman bodies of the meta-barons, both cyborg and hybrid, are moving away from the ideal of a divine and all-powerful body and on the contrary blur the line between the augmented body and the disabled body, showing that any physical modification is accompanied by a loss, access to a truly augmented body then passing through the acceptance of this loss.…”

« C’est eux contre nous » ou « Qui a peur de qui ? » : la rhétorique post-11 septembre de l’administration américaine vue par la caricature de presse
Published 2011-09-01“…However, despite the context, on December 15th, three months after the attacks, Atlanta’s major daily newspaper, TheAtlanta Journal-Constitution, ran an editorial cartoon drawn by Mike Luckovich questioning John Ashcroft’s management of the USA PATRIOT Act.The apparent purpose of the caricature is to satirize the way the Arab or Muslim communities are stigmatized as “enemies within” and to critique the artificial dichotomy used by the administration: “Us versus them”.However, the decision to depict John Ashcroft, leader of the domestic war-on-terror apparatus and prominent evangelist, indicates that what is at stake here is the thorny issue of the relations between state power and religion.Since cartoons may provide scholars with a glimpse of the political debate or public opinion surrounding past events, this essay will seek to highlight and reflect on the feelings of millions of Americans who, a few months after the implementation of the national security strategy, initiated a response to those confounding patriotism and bigotry.…”
