So to Speak: A Computational and Empirical Investigation of Lexical Cohesion of Non-Literal and Literal Expressions in Text
Published 2012-12-01“…Specifically, we look at five expressions headed by a verb which – depending on the context – can have either a literal or a non-literal meaning: bounce off the wall (“to be excited and full of nervous energy”), get one’s feet wet (“to start a new activity or job”), rock the boat (“to disturb the balance or routine of a situation”), break the ice (“to start to get to know people, to overcome initial shyness”), and play with fire (“to take part in a dangerous or risky undertaking”). …”

A Consequence-Based Response Framework for More Resilient Shipping Amidst Growing Uncertainty
Published 2025-01-01“…In the context of preparedness theory, the authors propose the adoption by shipping businesses, in parallel to any other risk approaches and tools, of the Assessment-reaction-Recovery-Conversion (ArRC) framework for managing risk and of relevant key recovery indicators which may assist in (a) increasing resilience through focusing the recovery planning on consequence-oriented, root-neutral reactions and (b) in promoting a “bounce-back-better” frame of mind and action plan, contributing to faster and easier recovery after a shock of any type.…”

Long-Range Optomechanical Interactions in SiN Membrane Arrays
Published 2025-01-01“…Optomechanical systems using a membrane-in-the-middle configuration can exhibit a long-range type of interaction similar to how atoms show collective motion in an optical potential. Photons bounce back and forth inside a high-finesse Fabry-Pérot cavity and mediate the interaction between multiple membranes over a significant distance compared to the wavelength. …”

Investigating the Effect of Preimpact Energy Dissipation on Coefficient of Restitution regarding the Slope-Boulder Interaction
Published 2021-01-01“…The results show that (1) as the inclination of initial velocity, higher rebound height, and the declining normal coefficient of restitution occur, a determinable linear function could demonstrate relationships among energy dissipation and all coefficient of restitution; when initial velocity exceeds 5 m/s, the recovery ability shows and produces an increasing trend with respect to the variation of kinematic coefficient of restitution and kinetic energy coefficient of restitution. (2) As the surface material varies, slope hardness and rebound ability influence normal coefficient of restitution, and the surface roughness and rotation feature dominate tangential coefficient of restitution; considering preimpact slope and boulder interactions, four types of coefficient of restitution follow declining trend with different material sequence. (3) Slope angle affects normal coefficient of restitution, and tangential coefficient of restitution relatively descends 18% and inclines 10% when the angle ranges from 30° to 75°; regarding preimpact moving status, it differs from bounce times. The correlation between preimpact energy dissipation and four coefficients of restitution can be represented by the same decreasing linear function, when increasing the slope angle.…”
