Summary:Blockchain technology has become a pivotal force at the intersection of information and communication technology (ICT) and education, offering significant benefits to academic institutions and various industries. Despite its widespread adoption, a comprehensive exploration of its applications in education is lacking in the literature. This study, covering the years 2017 to 2022, aims to fill this knowledge gap by meticulously analyzing 156 publications from Scopus and Web of Science databases. Through systematic examination, this study seeks to illuminate the numerous advantages, challenges, and unanswered questions associated with using blockchain in education. Additionally, this paper intends to investigate existing frameworks and models within the education sector. This study not only explores blockchain's academic applications but also considers its potential contributions to sustainability through secure, paperless, and decentralized educational infrastructures. Employing a hybrid approach, the rigorous methodologies of bibliometric review with the comprehensive Theory-Context-Characteristics-Methods (TCCM) framework, in line with the SPAR-4-SLR Protocol have been combined. This multifaceted methodology provides both qualitative and quantitative insights into this evolving field. The findings of the study collectively underscore the surging research interest in blockchain's integration within the education sector, transcending the boundaries of various academic domains. This study amalgamates diverse research insights, providing invaluable perspectives for education stakeholders and serving as an indispensable industry resource for harnessing the full potential of blockchain technology in education.
