| description | A new type of public festivities have been taking place in Europe in the last decades. These festivities, that we qualify as “new”, differ from traditional ones not only in the themes they use but also in relation to the almost unconditional access they offer to all those who wish to participate. This article sets out to identify the factors that cause the transformation of the ways in which European cities organize their festivities while questioning the relevance of the classic concept of effervescence in the analytical process. More precisely, we aim to find out if the Durkheimian concept allows us to apprehend and analyze successfully these festivities of a new type. Before giving a positive answer to this question, we distinguish between three different dimensions of the condition of effervescence: its semantic dimension which depends on institutional actors; its organizational dimension which obeys to strategies of enchantment; and its emotional dimension which enables the union of the community. |
