Description
Summary:WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR DIFFERENCES IN MEANING BETWEEN HEBREW BIBLE TRANSLATIONS? There are differences in meaning between Hebrew Bible translations and their reason is twofold. 1. Differences resulting from doubtful meaning or doubtful form of the source text are limited in number but they can be remarkably deep. They appear when: a. the source text is obscure and translators can only guess its meaning. b. Several different versions of the Hebrew text has been preserved and each translator can chose one of them to make it a base for his rendering. c. The source text has been recently reinterpreted in a significant way, but still some translators follow its older interpretation. 2. Differences resulting from disparate “translation strategies” are more numerous but less significant, provided that the translations compared are based on the same interpretation of the source text. The Biblical passages discussed in the paper are Genesis 4:7; 47:21; Exodus 3:14; Leviticus 19:18; Psalms 2:11-12; 89:20; 137:5 and Isaiah 9:19.
