| Summary: | This article explores the way in which an object is presented to children, i.e. the rhetoric at work to seduce children (and parents in some cases). While education may be present in some products, today a rhetoric of "fun" dominates, associating the object with childhood via entertainment and a sense of belonging among peers. This is achieved in part through the use of licensed characters or universes that offer a ready-made rhetoric of fun. But in analyzing available universes, we see that we can break down fun into two opposite poles: on one hand, cute, such as the Hello Kitty archetype, and on the other, cool, which Titeuf allows users to obtain with its logic. Through this distinction between cute and cool, this article contributes to the analysis of the spread of “fun” culture, through childhood objects imbedded with contemporary entertainment which suceed at capturing the interest of children. |
