| Summary: | This article looks at the “1848 moment”, showing how the concept of circulation, applied to the displacement of individuals and groups, to the transpositions and reappropriations of ideas, legislation, and repertoires of action, proves to be particularly heuristic for studying this sequence. It also aims to question the irenic image of a “springtime of the peoples”, a chrononym that appeared later on, and to highlight the ambivalences of 1848 in France and in Europe. Far from being a conciliatory moment of concord between peoples, the 1848 sequence saw an outbreak of xenophobic episodes alongside the adoption of more restrictive measures on migration and mobility. |
