| description | The Chilean director Patricio Guzmán has an intense relationship with literature, perceptible both in the themes and the form of his films. This connection is not limited to literary adaptations or exercises in intertextuality, but rather constitutes a creative dialogue with literature—especially with the essay—that influences the way the filmmaker reflects on the world through audiovisual means. We will analyze this connection between cinema and literature through three medium-length television films inspired by books: Pueblo en vilo (1995), La isla de Robinson Crusoé (1999), and Mon Jules Verne (2005). Our hypothesis is that, in these films, Guzmán progressively moves away from traditional documentary to venture into the cinematic essay. |
