Description
Summary:This paper stresses the place of generational studies by French historians. White must have focused on historical generations (« génération du feu »), we concentrate here on demographic generations; its purpose is to underline the fruitfulness of the category in social history. Drawing upon evidence from the life course of two cohorts of Parisian working women born ten years apart before the Worfd War I, the author emphasizes the differences existing between the two generations at various tuming points (getting occupational training, starting a family, retiring). The differenciation is caused by interactions between the labor market, individual choices and the institutional context (further education, the developping Welfare State, the reform of the system of retirement). Coupled with a study of the advances in public Schooling, negociations between fecondity and professional activity and preparation for retirement, our interpretation leads to a reappraisal of French society, seen in both its rigidities and its transformations.
