Description
Summary:The house has always represented one of the most important types in Iranian architecture, reflecting the country’s social and cultural developments. During the Qajar and the first two decades of the Pahlavi periods, architecture of houses underwent major changes: more obvious in some elements and less so in others. A variety of local approaches and factors have influenced these developments, and hence the nuances throughout the country. An overview of the main elements of the traditional houses of Tabriz illustrates such developments very well. Not only the overall configuration of the house has undergone transformations, there has also been changes in spatial priorities in plans and thereby in façades. Thus, some of the elements previously located deep inside the building were gradually made visible in the exteriors. The focus of the current study is on the spatial structure and elements in the main organs of the houses and the façades along with the importance these elements gain in the process. Clearly, the evolution of the organs of residential houses in Tabriz has played a formative role in the physical appearance of the city.
