description | The conlangs phenomenon have been more and more significant, especially through some very famous fictional languages in science fiction and fantasy. However, not all conlangs are used in stories or associated with a character. Conlangs are created for a variety of different reasons. Whatever the reason for constructing a language, how the languages sound is still of great concern for many language creators. This article considers how conlangers construct the sound system of their conlangs, and in particular the role of sound symbolism in their languages. Using a questionnaire for language creators, the author identifies the most prevalent concerns. Thus, several factors effectively influence conlangs’ sound systems : ease of pronunciation, aesthetics and beauty, naturalism and realism and other existing languages. These factors seem to be interrelated and contribute to the construction of sounds in conlangs. |
