Description
Summary:Objectives With the increase in aged population and considering the important effect of aging perception on the quality of life and healthy ageing, better understanding of factors related to perception of aging is necessary. One of these influential factors may be personality traits. The present study aims to investigate the predictability of aging perception based on personality traits in Iranian older adults. Methods & Materials This is a descriptive-analytical study with a cross-sectional design conducted in 2023 on 215 older adults referred to health centers in Mashhad, Iran, who were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria using a multi-stage sampling method. The data were collected using the brief version of Barker’s Perception of Aging Questionnaire (B-APQ) and Goldberg’s big five inventory, and analyzed in SPSS software, version 16 using statistical tests including t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Results The mean age of the participants was 68.4±7.03 years; 67.6% (n=144) were male and 32.4% (n=69) were female. The results of the regression analysis showed that conscientiousness (P=0.02), extroversion (P=0.008) and neuroticism (P<0.001) could significantly predict the perception of aging. According to the coefficient of determination, the research model was able to explain 22% of the variance in aging perception. Conclusion Conscientiousness, extraversion, and neuroticism can predict the perception of aging in Iranian older adults. Therefore, it is recommended that health policymakers and mental health professionals in Iran help improve perceptions of aging by designing educational and counseling programs focused on promoting conscientiousness and extraversion and reducing the neuroticism in older adults.
