| description | This study deals with the role of co-text in specifying the meaning of verbs and their derivatives. Of course, this process can be accounted for by investigating the context, the meaning of verbs and their derivatives, based on different semantic and lexical contextual clues. Context and co-text account for the meanings verb forms and their derived forms convey in Arabic language. These forms include past forms, present forms, imperatives and derived forms (subjects, objects, adjectives). So, it is clear that the meaning of verbs and their morphological derivatives result from their context not, as experts of Arabic language assume, from predetermined meanings which are almost fixed. The meaning of verbs is different from that of descriptive derivatives, the difference being due to dependence on co-textual clues used in the expressions. For example, sometimes past tense signifies future time, or present tense and imperatives may denote other than these meanings. The basis of all these adjustments and modifications is the co-textual clues which language carries with it. |
