Description
Summary:All tyrannical regimes manipulate history to impose a vision that suits their political objectives. In Syria, ancient history, particularly that of Palmyra, is being completely rewritten without any regard for historical and archaeological documentation. The aim is to feed an exacerbated nationalism by putting any foreign presence on trial, accusing it of being a colonial enterprise, be it Roman, Turkish or French. But this discourse is not without danger, because it means that part of the country’s rich heritage is denigrated as vestiges of colonialism, and the population is distracted from preserving it.
