| Summary: | Some exceptional work has been published by Spanish geographers on rail transport, as we can see from the meeting of the UGI working group ‘Geografía del Transporte' held in Leon in August 1986 as part of the Regional Conference on Mediterranean Countries. There are also some pioneering theoretical works, such as those developed by the University of Barcelona – the Equipo Urbano directed by Horacio Capel – in which a simulation model is applied to the Spanish railway network (Revista de Geografía, 1972). Several study monographs were made on rail access to Madrid (María Pilar González Yanci, 1977); trains in the southeast (Antonio Abellán García, 1979) and, subsequently, among others, a PhD thesis on passenger trains in the region of Madrid (Gloria Fernández-Mayoralas, 1988). There have also been various studies on narrow-gauge railways, and more recently, on the effects of high-speed rail. |
