| Summary: | The discovery during archaeological excavations of an embalmed human heart in a sixteenth century reliquary was the opportunity for a multidisciplinary team to work on the balm’s composition. The use of a wide range of investigative techniques (including palynology, chromatography and palaeogenetics) has improved our knowledge of the species and techniques used to perform this surgical act, and also helped if only a little to rehabilitate embalming whether medieval or modern. |
