Summary: | In this article, situated in the field Gender and Language Studies, I examine the processes of turning rape into narrative. More precisely I analyze the interactional categorization of a narrative of sexual experience as rape. Based on the study of a corpus of narratives of rape collected on the doctissimo.fr forum, I analyze the discourse of sexual violence, in particular what can be said and what cannot: these narratives are interesting because rape comes out as difficult to categorize and name, which does not, however prevent such experiences from being narrated. I show that putting the word rape on a sexual act is a complex discursive operation, beyond psycho-social considerations: it implies a process that involves reflexivity and turning violence into narrative. This discursive, often interactional work ultimately makes rape a poly-referential word that does not simply refer to facts, but also to a discursive presentation of these facts as part of an interpretative gesture. |
