Description
Summary:Abstract: This work comes from the methodological and analytical approach of the existing maps through their contexts, developed by Brian Harley (1932-1991). In this sense, the map of the capital of the former Província de São Paulo, from 1842, was produced under the threat of an invasion of the province’s capital by a group – the liberals – who opposed the decisions of the group in power at the time – the conservatives. The lieutenant José Jacques da Costa Ourique, newly vested head of the Topographical Bureau of Sao Paulo, is required to draw a map that would present a proposal for the fortification of the city to the then Baron of Caxias, leader of the situationist military contract. Another observed approach is the decontextualization of the map’s initial goal - military fortification - to observe its uses today. In nowadays analysis it’s observed the constant denial (of the barriers, the lines of fortification, artillery), or even its suppression in some copies.
