| Summary: | This article seeks to establish a geographical analysis of the recent emergence of fintechs and how they have been developing in Brazil. In the first part, we problematize the very notion of “fintech”, which has at least three different meanings in the academic literature. In the second part of the text, which is more empirical in nature, we try to show why fintechs have settled preferentially in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region, using cartographic representation and the tabulation of significant information on the “digital services” offered by fintechs. Finally, we conclude that, despite being a thriving phenomenon, the rise of fintechs does not seem to be bringing major changes to the oligopolized structure of the Brazilian financial market. |
