description We present here a very brief history of the musical setting of French poetry by focusing on the period 1850-1950, which represents the “golden age” of the “French Song”, a genre caught between the poles of subjectivity (extreme attention to the letter of the text) and objectivity (predominance of musical structures). This tension between textual and musical constraints in the melodic configurations can be seen as an encounter between two competing narrativities.
