description The canons of the Sainte-Chapelle de Paris established relations of good neighbourliness and mutual aid with the magistrates of the courts of justice who occupied the palatial enclosure of the Ile de la Cité. Their links were particularly close to three royal jurisdictions: the Bailliage du Palais, the Chambre des Comptes, and the Parliament of Paris. They tried to use these friendships to resolve the legal disputes in which they were involved, and to defend their material interests. However, the protection of the king’s officers proved ineffective in resolving internal disputes, which multiplied among the canons after the appointment of Claude Auvry to the office of Treasurer. Nor did it prevent the detachment of the king, who in the 17th century was disinterested in the fate of the college founded by S. Louis.
