| Summary: | First of all, the town of Saint–Louis is a European trading post established in the XVIIth at the mouth of the river Senegal, on N’dar island. This long and narrow island constitutes the historical heart of the old colonial town. Different phases of its expansion are still visible. They explained the inscription of the historical center on the list of mondial heritage, in December 2000. The golden age of the town goes all along the last quarter of the XIXth. In 1895, Saint–Louis became the capital of West French Africa. The town has a very famous chequered urban plan, one of the most remarkable in West Africa. Saint–Louis town’s safeguard is an important stake for the ministry of cultural affairs. It needs an inventory work of architectural heritage in order to set up a database and to take action of preservation, without however changing the historical heart into a museaum–town. |
