description | Former residents of the Bon Pasteur religious congregation are now denouncing their confinement when teenagers. Based upon ten life histories collected in 2018 and 2019, this article studies the emergence of a feeling of suffered violence, the process of its individual and social acknowledgment as well as its impacts on their identification and construction as subjects. These ten women were born between 1945 and 1963. They have been placed in the institution when children because they were considered “delinquent” or victim of their family or social background. Most of them spent several years between the narrow walls of the religious institution, suffering institutional violence and sometimes abuse. Although their socialization and position didn’t encourage them to speak up in public, from now on their voices are getting heard, audible and recognized. But how do these life stories emerge fifty years after their stay in the institution? And what are their meanings and consequences? Analyzing the production and diffusion of their speech, I show how these women succeed in building and using a feeling of unfairness, allowing them to be acknowledged as victims of their parents and/or of the institution, and allowing them to ask for compensations and new social rights for themselves and for the others. |
