Description
Summary:This descriptive text aims to summarise the multiple points of view of low-income families regarding the possibility of having the choice between different schools for their children. These coherent testimonies were taken from the experiences of students who had no choice of school (due to the use of catchment areas) except stigmatised lycées ZEP (schools benefiting from extra resources because of their location) in Seine-Saint-Denis. Thus, they represent “the reasons of the weakest”: those who were told they had received ‘educational capital’ but are in fact disadvantaged as far as this offer is concerned. They are less familiar with the school system and thus unlikely to make informed choices in what has become a market economy. These oral testimonies make practical, social sense and are remote from the caricatures of “sink housing-estates” residents with their so-called ‘educational carelessness’ and inability to express concepts. They give quite convincing accounts of their abilities to analyse about their situation.
