Description
Summary:This article explores the professional experience of primary schoolteachers with immigrant backgrounds, drawing on the notion of contradictions and dilemmas of status elaborated by American interactionist sociologist Everett C. Hughes. We argue that teachers with immigrant backgrounds can, in certain cases, be stigmatized because their social, gender, or racial traits depart from the common characteristics generally associated with primary school teachers. To what extent being a school teacher with immigrant backgrounds can then create contradictions and dilemmas of status based on an ethnicization of attributes linked to migratory origin such as skin color, social origin or belonging religious?
