| description | The present paper analyzes the results of a survey performed in 2008 by the Spanish center for sociological investigation (CIS) about contemporary perceptions of the 1936-39 civil war. It shows that the period of political maturation of an individual as a young adult has a dominant influence upon his representation of the conflict. There seems to be not so much an evolution of a dominant historical memory as the coexistence of several, the appearance and disappearance of which follow the change of generations. Individuals manipulate the memory of the conflict as efficiently –and probably more efficiently– than institutions. They certainly did during the dictatorship era, within a regime that was practicing discrimination according to political affiliation and past. Within a widely legitimated democracy, they still manipulate the past to make it coherent with their own image. |
