Description
Summary:A developer-funded archaeological excavation carried out in 1999 at 140a rue de Rivoli in Paris (1st arrondissement) provided an opportunity to investigate a section of the first urban defence ditch on the right bank of the Seine. It also enabled confirmation of a hypothesis concerning the ditch’s direction. The date of construction, between 978 and 997-998, has been determined from written sources. The enclosure was maintained throughout the 11th century. The refilled ditch was covered by a street during the second half of the 12th century, and the area served as a sand quarry (2nd half of 12th-13th century), before being finally occupied by the garden of the Hotel de Ponthieu (late medieval period).
