description Putting together the lives, careers and works of two architect-engineer brothers bearing identical names, Pierre I (doc. 1599-†1621/1622) and Pierre II Souffron (1554-†1649), makes up one of the main objectives of this Degree thesis, which has been devised as a twin monograph. Valuable research has thrown a new light on a number of hereto unknown facts aimed at making complete both their family and professional history, in addition to spotting the extent of their activity as well as documenting their role in a no less than 49 building projects. Both polyvalent, creative and highly gifted brothers have known how to embody past building traditions into the day's large-scale project sites while adapting to the latest models being promoted through treaties signed by the likes of Serlio, Palladio, Vignole, de l'Orme and Bullant. By opening new ways, especially regarding the connections with royal art, family and professional networks, work planning as well as the dissemination of knowledge and expertise, this survey provides a renewed vision of architectural history in France's Southern provinces circa 1600.
