description “People, places, participation, inclusion, diversity, education and social change” (Higgins, 2012) – these are the themes that form the basis of Community Music, a thirty-year international experience that is now also established in Italy. Community Music is an educational tool to develop integration processes, social advancement, and individual growth, to improve the cultural performance of the community and to face the new challenges of our modern, complex societies. Within musicology, which in recent decades has increasingly focused on educational goals and methods of knowledge transfer, there are interest groups that are interested in the achievements of community music both in ensemble musical practice and in theoretical approaches. New models such as Community Opera, based on storytelling and the collaborative creation of musical experiences, have paved the way for teaching and learning environments that promote historical knowledge and aesthetic appreciation. This joint paper highlights some of the characteristics of community music in Italy: the theoretical underpinnings of the pedagogical model, its content and experiences, and the transmission of historical-musical knowledge beyond the formal teaching and learning context.
