| Summary: | Ontological and epistemic tolerance refers to the respect for ways of being and knowing, for the worldview, language and knowledge of actors in different worlds. Respect for the standards of existence and coexistence of the actors of the Global South and of the Global North, and the freedom of the latters to imagine possible worlds (freedom of worldification; multi-world logic) to contain the unimondist ontology imposed by the West or to resist against ‘’the mono-ontological occupation of the planet“ are also part of this form of tolerance. In contrast, ontological and epistemic intolerance refers to manifesting a disrespectful, contemptuous, and sometimes violent attitude towards others’ worldview and knowledge (for example, magico-religious knowledge). This form of intolerance can manifest itself in the form of social exclusion, destruction of local and indigenous knowledge, ways of thinking and acting, and identity, culture, physical, psychological or other forms of destruction. The relevance, and the stake, of an epistemic and ontological tolerance education project resides in the fact that this represents a tool capable of contributing to the reduction of the ravages of all kinds of ontologico-epistemic intolerance in the Global North and Global South. |
